Course introduction & overview
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to computer networking, focusing on both fundamental concepts and practical skills using Cisco technologies.
You will begin by exploring the core components of computer networks and their basic characteristics, along with an introduction to Cisco IOS Software and its key features. From there, the course dives into Local Area Networks (LANs), the role of switches, and how Ethernet operates within the TCP/IP model.
As you progress, you will gain hands-on experience installing and configuring network devices such as switches and routers. You’ll learn how data moves across networks, including host-to-host communication, routing functions, and troubleshooting common network issues. The course also covers essential IP concepts, including IPv4 addressing, subnetting, and the structure of the TCP/IP model across internet, transport, and application layers. In addition, you will be introduced to IPv6, its addressing scheme, and basic configuration.
Beyond the basics, you will explore more advanced networking topics such as VLANs, trunking, inter-VLAN routing, dynamic routing protocols like OSPF, and technologies like STP, RSTP, and EtherChannel. You will also learn about redundancy protocols, WAN and VPN concepts, and network services such as DHCP and NAT.
Security and network management are key components of modern networking, and this course introduces current security threats, defense technologies, and best practices for hardening network devices. You will also gain insight into wireless networking, Quality of Service (QoS), and modern network architectures, including virtualization, software-defined networking (SDN), and solutions like Cisco DNA Center, SD-Access, and SD-WAN.
By the end of this course, you will have a strong foundation in networking concepts, practical configuration skills, and an understanding of modern network technologies, preparing you for further study or entry-level networking roles.
